I always wanted one of those puffer things, and now I have one. But it's not as cool as I would have hoped. When the doctor gave it to me he had to show me how to use it and all the important things I had to remember when using it. He told me how it wasn't safe to share puffers with other kids even if they had asthma too. My puffer helps me breathe when I'm having difficulty, but I need to carry it everywhere. I'm usually a forgetful person, but now I've become more organized and responsible which makes my mom happy. Asthma makes things a bit different now in gym class and other sports. I need to take the puffer now before I play soccer or hockey but it really makes playing sports a lot more fun, because now I don't always have to sit down to catch my breath or anything like that. Asthma's really not that bad once you get the hang of it.

When I got Asthma there were definitely a lot of changes, I got a puffer and all that but the biggest decision that my family was forced to make was what to do with our family cat Keiko. We got Keiko when I was only five years old or so and since then he's become one of my best friends. When the doctor told me that I had asthma and that meant getting rid of my favourite pet I was so angry! Mom said that we would find Keiko a good home and that we would make sure that he would be treated the same way as I cared for him. But I just didn't understand why we had to give him away; I didn't know how my cat could possibly be harming my asthma. That's when mom and I went back to the doctor to discuss how Keiko's fur was a trigger of mine and added to my trouble breathing sometimes. I understood how it was important to keep healthy but it didn't make giving our cat away any easier. Keiko went to live with my grandma and so I still get to see him from time to time and I know that he is in good care. Mom and Dad say it's okay for me to get another pet as long as it doesn't have any fur, that means I can finally get a pet SNAKE!! Wow!!

One day while I was at school I was playing at recess and I felt by chest tighten. It was like someone was sitting on me and I found it hard to breathe in and out. I told the teacher outside and she sent me to the office where they called my mom. When my mom found out she was very scared because this had never happened to me before. I was really scared that something bad was wrong with me. I got to go to the hospital and to the emergency room. They checked my breathing and gave me some medicine that helped. I didn't have to stay there for the nighttime, which was good. The next day my mom told me that I had asthma and that if I took my puffer I would never have to go to the hospital again. I'm glad because I can still play road hockey with my friends and run in baseball.

Hi, my name is Kelsey, I am 9, and I have asthma. It is not very fun to have asthma. I don't like it because I cannot get a dog. I really want a dog. When I go to someone's house that has a dog, I get wheezy and that doesn't feel good. Then I have to take my puffers. I don't like asthma at all! If you had asthma you would not like it.
