You're on a new case. So what's your goal? To find out what to do at school when you've got asthma. This one'll be a snap.
When you go to school, things are not always the same as at home. Maybe your class has a pet, like a rabbit or a hamster. Or maybe there are different plants in your classroom. Or maybe they clean a little differently than your mom or dad does. And of course you have gym class at school too, where you might do a lot of running or jumping.
And some of these things might trigger your asthma. And you know what happens then… you might start coughing, or wheezing, or having trouble breathing...
So what do you do?
Do you stop going to school completely? Well... That might seem like a good idea to you, but your parents probably won't like it so much. Just because there are triggers at school doesn't mean that you can avoid school completely. And the truth is, school is important, especially for an Asthma Agent!
But don't worry. There are a few things you can do to make sure you keep breathing easy at school, and you're going to learn all of them.
- Tell your teacher. You and your parents should go talk to your teacher about your asthma. Next to your parents, you probably spend more time with your teacher than with any other grown up! So your teacher should know as much about your asthma as you and your parents do.
- Avoid any triggers. If your class has any pets or plants, let your parents know.
- Leave a spare reliever puffer with your teacher. If you ever need it, let your teacher know right away. You might need to use it at certain times, like before gym class. Tell your parents when you have used your reliever inhaler at school.
- Know your action plan. Both you and your teacher should know this.
